What are Selected Techniques for Conservation?
Cultural properties are an important part of the heritage built by our forebears and we have the great duty to conserve them and transmit them on to future generations. The traditional techniques and skills required to maintain cultural properties are essential to the performance of this duty.
Among these, the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties lays down that essential traditional techniques and skills (Conservation Techniques for Cultural Properties) in special need of protection shall be designated as Selected Techniques for Conservation, and their practitioners and related conservation organizations be registered accordingly.
This system was established to sustain key techniques for the conservation of cultural properties, and includes such activities as support for skill improvement, training to nurture and secure successors in these craft trades, and the compilation of records of the techniques and skills.
