Providing the backdrops for Kabuki actors
to give their best once the curtain rises

Kabuki Stage Settings (Stage Scenery)
Preservation Society

 Designated in 2002

Kanai Scene Shop Co., Ltd. Kinshi Building, 2-8-1 Shintomi,
Chuo-ku, Tokyo. 104-0041

Kabuki theatre employs a whole range of stage settings, including kakiwari (depictions of scenery) and harimono (props representing rocks, trees etc.). The backdrops tend to be flat, and of a decorative rather than realistic nature. The stage settings, with their distinctive shapes and colors, set the mood and scene, allowing audiences to follow the plot and direction of the play.
