Props can be divided into those placed on the stage before the performance and those which the actors hold in their hands. Some are the real things, while others are imitations, including special theatrical devices such as the revolving doors used in Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan, and breakables such as dishes that are smashed on stage. The imitation props are expected to obtain more telling theatrical effects than the real objects themselves.
