Restoring the doors, windows and other joinery in shrines, temples and traditional homes requires attention to detail, familiarity with a range of tools, and ample experience. The joinery must be accurate to within less than a millimeter. The joiner must also have an artistic eye when it comes to kumiko, the assembling of small pieces of wood without nails or adhesives to produce panels and pieces resembling fretwork. The conservation of important cultural properties depends on skilled and experienced craftsmen.
