There are two main styles of traditional plastering: Koshiki-Kyōkabe (Classic Kyōto style) and Shikkui (lime plastering). The former is often seen in the restrained yet elegant huts used for tea ceremonies, while the latter has been used for the white walls of Himeji Castle. A considerable amount of skill is required to produce beautiful and durable walls. The plasterer must select only the best of materials and have a knowledge of how they are blended and how moisture will be absorbed.
