Outline

Conservation Techniques for Cultural Properties are the essential skills for passing on to future generations the cultural properties created, nurtured, conserved and transmitted to us across our country’s long history. Among them, the Agency for Cultural Affairs designates those in special need of protection as Selected Techniques for Conservation. The Agency produces records of how each task is performed, and supports training for craftsmen and women seeking to carry on their respective traditions. It provides necessary assistance for the skilled workers, training activities organized by conservation groups, and aspiring successors to these trades.

Among these, the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties lays down that essential traditional techniques and skills (Conservation Techniques for Cultural Properties) in special need of protection shall be designated as Selected Techniques for Conservation, and their practitioners and related conservation organizations be registered accordingly.

This system was established to sustain key techniques for the conservation of cultural properties, and includes such activities as support for skill improvement, training to nurture and secure successors in these craft trades, and the compilation of records of the techniques and skills.
