Sukumo is a natural indigo dye sourced from the indigo plant (Persicaria tinctoria). Its production is a very time-consuming process, involving special skill and careful and constant watching. Aishi or Tamashi is the name given to the craftsmen who have mastered the art of producing this dye. The Awa Indigo Preserve Society is keen to maintain and pass on the techniques for making the dye that produces that produces this beautiful Japanese blue.
